Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after 16 years. The donation, valued at $8,000, includes four single drums, one brass drum, and one set of four tenor drums, courtesy of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.

Principal Epi Raikivi shared his enthusiasm and appreciation on behalf of the 14-member band, composed of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages. He mentioned, “In 2008, the Fiji Police Force donated their drum set to our school, and since then, we’ve been repairing and reusing it.”

Raikivi also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu’s contributions, who has been involved with the band since 2012 and played a pivotal role in reaching out to the festival committee for assistance. “The band has been part of the festival entertainment group for five years,” he noted.

Despite the recent resignation of their teacher, his leadership had been crucial in obtaining the much-needed equipment for the band, which is located approximately 33 kilometers from Labasa Town. Dressed in light blue and navy blue uniforms, the band actively participates in performances for other schools, organizations, and various community events.

Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community and music education. “This donation highlights our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” she stated. Ibrahim also pointed out that the festival previously contributed $5,000 worth of equipment last year, along with an additional $3,000 worth in their latest donation, as part of their long-term commitment.
