Nabala Secondary School, the only institution in the Northern Division with a drum band, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after a 16-year wait. The $8,000 donation includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, provided by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13 representing 11 villages. He recalled that in 2008, a drum set was donated by the Fiji Police Force, which the school had been repairing and using since.
Raikivi also paid tribute to Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been involved with the band since 2012 and played a crucial role in securing assistance from the festival committee. The band has participated in the festival’s entertainment lineup for the past five years. Although the teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership was key to obtaining the new equipment.
Situated about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, which wears light blue and navy blue uniforms, frequently performs for other schools, organizations, and community events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community support and music education. She noted that this donation highlights their dedication to developing the community and enhancing skills in music education. Ibrahim also mentioned previous contributions, including $5,000 worth of equipment in the past year, and an additional $3,000 worth in this latest donation, reflecting their long-term commitment to supporting local schools.
