The family of a man who passed away while in custody at the Savusavu Police Station is seeking clarity regarding the events leading up to his death. Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, was reportedly found deceased in his cell on Tuesday and was declared dead upon arrival at Savusavu Hospital.

Radua’s aunt, Unaisi Solaila, stated that her nephew appeared to be in good health when he was taken by police officers earlier that day. “He was picked up in the morning. At 1pm I received the news that he had died,” she recounted. Ms. Solaila expressed concern over Radua being placed in a cell with another individual known to have mental health issues. A relative who was also being held at the police station reportedly heard Radua calling for help from his cell.

Additionally, Ms. Solaila mentioned that wounds and blood were observed on Radua’s body when a family member viewed him at the hospital. “They carried him dead to the vehicle,” she stated, noting that when family members arrived at the hospital to identify the body, they had trouble recognizing him. The family is demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Radua’s death, particularly the events that transpired in the cell.

In response, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew indicated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been directed to investigate the situation. The police have stated that more information will be available once the CID completes its inquiry.

This incident raises serious questions about the conditions and treatment of individuals in custody, emphasizing the importance of thorough investigations to ensure accountability and justice. The family’s pursuit of answers underscores their commitment to seeking truth and transparency during a challenging time. It is hoped that the investigation leads to clearer understanding and necessary reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
