Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew announced that discussions are ongoing regarding the operational steps necessary for the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine currently held by the police. Seized in January 2024, the drugs are set to be destroyed following the High Court in Lautoka’s recent approval for this action.

Commissioner Fong Chew emphasized the importance of careful planning, stating that they are determining the specific arrangements for the destruction process in compliance with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and court directives. He indicated that once these logistics are confirmed, details regarding the time and location of the destruction will be communicated to the public.

The High Court highlighted the impracticality of moving such a large quantity of drugs from Nasinu to Lautoka for the upcoming trial, scheduled for April 2025. As a result, the court has established strict guidelines for the destruction, which includes requirements for documenting the process via video footage to be submitted as part of the court’s records.

This situation underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in managing seized narcotics while respecting judicial processes. The planned destruction of these drugs signifies a proactive approach to addressing drug trafficking issues in the region, providing a sense of progress in the fight against substance abuse. As discussions continue, there is hope that a safer environment can be cultivated through these decisive actions against illegal drugs.
