Mystery of the Lomaiviti Princess II Grounding Unfolds in Fiji

The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is currently investigating the grounding of the passenger vessel Lomaiviti Princess II in the Maloi Passage along the west coast of Ovalau. The incident occurred yesterday while the vessel was departing Natovi Jetty for Levuka, carrying over 40 passengers, crew members, and five vehicles.

MSAF’s chief executive officer, Joweli Cawaki, reported being notified of the situation shortly after it took place. He stated, “Lomaiviti Princess II accidentally ran aground at approximately 9:20 AM yesterday.” Fortunately, another vessel, the Saint Mary, was in the vicinity to assist by towing the grounded ship and transporting the passengers to Levuka.

Goundar Shipping Service’s manager, Captain Aca James Small, mentioned that the vessel followed its regular route when it struck the reef. He indicated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the grounding, emphasizing that the crew members might have been negligent, as they were familiar with the route. “Thankfully, no passengers were hurt or injured,” he added.

Captain Small also noted that the salvage operation would need to wait for high tide before they could proceed. As a result of the incident, Goundar Shipping Limited has suspended all scheduled travel to Levuka until further notice.
