The investigation into the death of Jason Rigby, an Australian hotel manager at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Nadi, has concluded without any findings of foul play. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mesake Waqa announced that the case file has been submitted to the Resident Magistrate, with police recommending a full inquest.
Rigby was found last December with a stab wound in his apartment, leading to widespread speculation about the nature of his death. Despite the police’s conclusion of no foul play, his family remains skeptical, believing there were suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. They have engaged a private investigator who uncovered a multitude of messages and a complex personal timeline from Rigby’s iCloud and WhatsApp accounts.
This additional evidence led the family to present their findings to the authorities during a visit to Fiji, resulting in the case being initially treated as a suspected murder. However, police ultimately closed the investigation, directing the matter to a coronial inquest. Forensic pathologist Professor Roger Byard emphasized the rarity of suicide by stabbing, insisting that such cases mandate thorough investigations to rule out homicide.
The hotel community, alongside Rigby’s family, continues to seek clarity and answers as they navigate this tragic situation. The outpouring of support from the Crowne Plaza’s staff highlights the importance of unity during challenging times, and Rigby’s family is determined to pursue the truth, reflecting resilience in the face of sorrow.
This case showcases the critical need for transparency in investigations surrounding unexpected deaths and underscores the strength found in community support amid grief.
