Mystery Illness Strikes Fiji Hotel: What Happened to Guests?

Fiji’s authorities are currently investigating the hospitalization of seven guests from a well-known hotel on the Coral Coast. As concerns about suspected methanol poisoning rise, Australia’s travel advisory site, smarttraveller.gov.au, has updated its guidelines, urging travelers to remain vigilant regarding drink spiking and the potential risk of methanol poisoning.

The advisory, which is still in effect, emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance if drink spiking is suspected. This incident has drawn parallels with a recent event in Laos, where methanol poisoning contributed to tourist fatalities. However, Fijian officials are working diligently to clarify the situation and have stated that no definitive cause has been identified for the hospitalizations.

Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for Health, confirmed that the affected guests were transferred to Lautoka Hospital for treatment, and investigations are ongoing. He emphasized that suggestions of methanol poisoning have not originated from their inquiry and that the toxicology results are being processed by local police.

The acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, also reiterated that both police and health officials are thorough in their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the hospitalizations. Meanwhile, the Warwick Fiji resort has refrained from providing additional comments, indicating that its general manager is unavailable for updates.

In light of these events, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is offering consular assistance to the families involved, but is limited due to privacy regulations.

While the investigation continues, it is important to remain hopeful that the health of those affected improves swiftly and that the cause of the hospitalizations is clarified, ensuring the safety of future visitors to Fiji.

This situation highlights the necessity of being cautious while traveling and the importance of addressing health-related incidents with sensitivity and transparency. As measures are taken to resolve the issue, the collaborative efforts between Fijian authorities and Australia could enhance safety and health standards for all tourists in the region.
