Toxicology tests have definitively shown that there were no illegal substances or methanol in the ingredients of the cocktail consumed by seven guests who became ill at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa last Saturday. The news was confirmed by Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka during a press conference, where he also stated that investigations by the Ministry of Health and Police are still ongoing.
The affected guests, which included four Australians, one American, and two foreign residents, experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues after drinking Pina Coladas at the resort. They were admitted to Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka for treatment.
Mr. Gavoka expressed relief at the results of the toxicology report, emphasizing that the tests showed no evidence of harmful substances in the drinks served. He shared that all individuals affected have since been discharged from the hospital and are fully recovered.
“This finding is excellent news for Fiji, particularly for our tourism sector,” said Mr. Gavoka. “It reassures the global community and travelers that their health and well-being remain our top priority.”
This incident, while concerning at first, ended on a positive note with the recovery of the affected guests. It serves as a reminder of the importance of swift medical response and the significance of maintaining high safety standards for tourists. The swift actions of health officials and the resort’s commitment to ensuring guest safety is commendable and provides hope for the continued trust in Fiji as a tourist destination.
