Mystery Illness at Fiji Resort: What Really Happened?

Toxicology tests conducted in relation to the incident at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa have confirmed that there were no illicit substances or methanol present in the ingredients of the cocktail consumed by seven guests who fell ill last Saturday. Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, announced the results during a press conference, noting that investigations by the Ministry of Health and local police are ongoing.

The affected individuals, all women including four Australians, an American, and two locals, exhibited symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues after drinking Pina Colada from the resort’s restaurant. They were promptly admitted to Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka for treatment.

Minister Gavoka expressed relief at the outcome of the toxicology report, stating, “We are pleased to report the findings of the toxicology report and also of the testing ingredients of the drinks served at the Warwick Fiji last weekend.” He confirmed that there were no traces of harmful substances and that all seven guests were discharged from medical care, having fully recovered.

The minister emphasized that these findings are encouraging news for Fiji and its tourism sector, providing reassurance to travelers worldwide about the safety of their experience. “The health and well-being of our visitors is our top priority,” Gavoka added.

This incident, although concerning, has ended on a positive note, highlighting the effectiveness of the medical response and the commitment of local authorities to ensure the safety of both tourists and residents. As Fiji continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic on tourism, reassuring news like this is vital for restoring confidence among potential visitors.
