Toxicology reports have confirmed that no illegal substances or methanol were present in the cocktail served to the seven guests who became ill at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast last Saturday.
During a press conference, Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced the test results, while investigations by the Ministry of Health and Police are still ongoing. The affected individuals, all women, included four Australians, an American, and two local residents. They were hospitalized at Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday after experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues after consuming Pina Colada drinks from the resort’s restaurant.
“We are pleased to announce the findings of the toxicology report, confirming no illicit substances or methanol in the drinks or their ingredients,” Mr. Gavoka stated. He added that all affected tourists and locals have since been discharged from the hospital and have fully recovered.
Mr. Gavoka expressed relief that the reports indicated no evidence of alcohol poisoning, highlighting this as good news for Fiji, particularly for its tourism industry. “The findings provide vital reassurance to the global community and all travelers. The health and wellbeing of our visitors is our top priority,” he emphasized.
In summary, the quick recovery of those involved and the negative result of the toxicology tests are positive developments that will likely enhance confidence in Fiji’s tourism sector.
This incident demonstrates the effectiveness of rapid medical responses, ensuring that visitors to Fiji can feel secure about their health while enjoying their vacations.
