Authorities are set to utilize DNA testing to verify the identity of a body found in the Dreketi River close to Saweni, Lautoka, on Wednesday afternoon. A group of young individuals made the unsettling discovery of the body, which was found in a state of partial decomposition.
Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the West, confirmed the condition of the remains. He noted that the body had likely been in the water for several days based on its state of decomposition, and stated, “We are relying on DNA tests to determine that, but it should have been there for quite a while.”
Currently, no suspects have been identified or questioned in relation to this case.
Witness Watisoni Veiqali, a local resident, explained how he happened upon the grim scene while on his way to go fishing with his brothers. He described that while waiting near the riverbank, he noticed a foul smell, which led him to discover the body about 200 to 300 meters offshore, entangled in mangroves. Concerned for safety, Mr. Veiqali quickly contacted another resident to alert the police before returning to the shore.
This incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the body’s presence in the river, and further investigation is ongoing as authorities work to solve this mysterious case.
In summary, the discovery emphasizes the importance of community vigilance and the role of local residents in assisting law enforcement. As the investigation unfolds, there is hope that answers will be found for this disturbing case, bringing clarity to the situation and closure for any affected families.
