Spread the love

Authorities plan to utilize DNA testing to establish the identity of a body found in the Dreketi River near Saweni, Lautoka. The horrifying discovery was made by a group of young individuals on Wednesday afternoon, who came across the partially decomposed remains.

Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the West, confirmed the state of the body, indicating that it likely had been in the water for several days. He noted, “We are relying on DNA tests to determine that, but it should have been there for quite a while because it was partly decomposed.”

At this time, no suspects have been identified or questioned regarding the case. Local resident Watisoni Veiqali, who was on his way to fish with his brothers, recounted his unsettling experience of finding the body. As he waited for his siblings, he detected an unusual smell, which led him to discover the body entangled in the mangroves about 200 to 300 meters from the shore.

Veiqali quickly contacted another local to report the find to the police and guided them to the location upon their arrival. He expressed surprise that those fishing nearby had not noticed the body’s odor.

The use of DNA testing is a pivotal step in the investigation, as it could provide crucial information for the police and potentially bring closure to the situation.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in addressing cases of unidentified bodies and serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance in reporting unusual findings.

Hopefully, the investigation will soon provide clarity and justice for the deceased and their loved ones.
