On New Year’s Day, 2025, the Northern Division experienced its first house fire when a four-bedroom home in Waiqele, Labasa, was consumed by flames in the early morning hours. Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, the homeowners who were on holiday in New Zealand, received the shocking news from a family member.
“The caretaker was away for the New Year holiday when the incident occurred around 3 am,” explained Ms. Devi, expressing gratitude towards a neighbor who promptly alerted the National Fire Authority (NFA). Despite facing challenges due to limited resources, the fire department bravely battled the blaze with just one water tank and a damaged hose.
The fire devastated two cars and partially damaged two vans, leading the couple to suspect arson, as they had previously faced threats, stone-throwing incidents, and an attempted break-in at their nearby shop. “These events make us hopeful that the authorities will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice,” said Ms. Devi, reflecting their commitment to seeking justice.
The estimated damage to their property stands at $250,000; however, the couple retains an optimistic perspective. “We have lodged a police complaint and trust that the authorities will uncover the truth and prevent such tragedies from affecting others,” Ms. Devi added.
Puamau Sowane, the CEO of the NFA, expressed sympathies to the affected family, highlighting the limitations the firefighters faced due to the absence of fire hydrants and local water sources. “The available water in the tank was fully utilized,” he confirmed, urging residents outside urban areas to take extra precautions considering their distance from fire stations.
Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, noted that an investigation is underway and they are waiting for the NFA report to determine the next steps. He mentioned, “This is the first fire report in the North for 2025.”
In a time of adversity, the family’s resilience shines through, showcasing their hope and trust in the authorities to seek justice and prevent future incidents. Their story serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and vigilance against dangers that can strike unexpectedly.
