Three children in Suva made a tragic discovery when they found the body of a newborn baby girl abandoned in a creek. This incident occurred around 8:30 AM behind the Wailada Industrial Subdivision in Lami, as reported by The Fiji Times.

The children, identified as Niko Verekauta, 10, Kini Murimurivalu, 8, and Peni Verekauta, 12, initially thought the baby was a doll. Upon closer inspection, they realized the baby was alive, albeit unresponsive and shivering. Unfortunately, by the time they returned to the scene with an adult, the infant was already deceased.

The baby was found wrapped in a pair of red trousers and a white shirt, with the placenta discarded nearby. The police were informed after local villagers alerted security guards at a nearby terminal, who then contacted the authorities. A police spokesperson confirmed that the baby appeared to be full-term and had likely been abandoned shortly after birth. Investigators are currently working to locate the baby’s mother, acknowledging that she may require medical assistance.

The discovery highlights a growing concern for child welfare and the protection of vulnerable individuals within the community. Law enforcement has indicated they might pursue charges against the mother if she is found, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

This particular incident resonates strongly with another recent case involving unidentified bodies found in local waterways, underscoring an urgent need for community vigilance and support systems for those in crisis. It is crucial that local residents work together to create a supportive environment that prioritizes the welfare of children and prevents such heart-wrenching incidents in the future.

Positive community dynamics may emerge from this tragedy, wherein collaborative efforts could foster better awareness and strategies to protect vulnerable populations, ultimately leading to a safer environment for everyone.
