During the tribunal hearing regarding the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, testified about a significant interaction he witnessed. Singh indicated that he was not aware of the details of the conversation between Pryde and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, which lasted for over 30 minutes at an official Japanese event.
Singh had previously shared a photo with the Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, which included a third unidentified individual conversing with Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum. When questioned by Justice Anare Tuilevuka regarding the identity of this third person, Singh admitted he could not specify who it was, noting that Japanese embassy staff had taken the picture.
Observing the two from a distance of about five meters, Singh remarked that their discussion appeared serious, as they were not engaged in light-hearted interaction typical of social gatherings. He also referenced legal advice he received from lawyer Hemendra Nagan, who warned him about the inappropriateness of Pryde engaging in conversation with Sayed-Khaiyum, especially given the latter’s ongoing investigation at that time.
The testimony reveals the intricate dynamics of political and legal discussions in Fiji, highlighting the involvement of prominent figures in what could be a pivotal tribunal case. The anticipation continues as Acting Chief Justice, Justice Salesi Temo, is expected to present testimony in the ongoing trial.
This situation reflects the complexities within governmental structures and the importance of transparency in public office, fostering hope for a judiciary that upholds accountability. The continued proceedings may result in significant outcomes that reinforce integrity within public service.
