Authorities are set to utilize DNA testing to ascertain the identity of a body found in the Dreketi River close to Saweni, Lautoka, on Wednesday afternoon. The discovery was made by a group of youths who encountered the partially decomposed remains.
Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the West, confirmed the condition of the body, suggesting that it had likely been in the water for several days due to its state. “We are relying on DNA tests to determine that, but it should have been there for quite a while because it was partly decomposed,” SSP Vaisewa indicated.
Currently, there have been no suspects questioned in connection with this matter. Local resident Watisoni Veiqali recounted his shocking experience of stumbling across the body while on his way to fish with his siblings. Mr. Veiqali reported that he noticed a foul smell, which led him to the grim find approximately 200 to 300 meters from the shoreline, caught in the mangroves. He promptly contacted another resident to alert the authorities and guided the police to the location once they arrived.
This case highlights the commitment of local authorities to uncover the truth behind unexplained disappearances and deaths. It also raises awareness about the importance of community vigilance and the role residents play in reporting unusual occurrences, which can aid in investigations. As the police conduct their inquiries and await the results of the DNA testing, it is hoped that answers will soon be provided for the community affected by this tragic event.
