Police are actively investigating an alleged rape case involving a 26-year-old Japanese tourist and an Indian national at a homestay in Nadi. The incident is reported to have occurred at the end of April, on the victim’s second night in the country. The victim, a teacher, alleged that she was raped by a man from Guwahati, Assam, India, who was also staying at the same property that night.
According to the tourist, the man approached her earlier in the evening, asking her to turn off the light as he wished to sleep. In the early hours of the morning, she claimed the same man attacked and raped her in the dark dormitory. She sustained visible injuries on her neck and leg, which she photographed as evidence.
The following morning, the tourist confided in a Fijian friend about the incident, which led to a report being filed at the Namaka Police Station. Police took her to the hospital for medical examinations, which included tests for diseases and pregnancy, all of which came back negative.
The victim and her friend contacted the press to highlight the urgency of justice, expressing concerns that the suspect remains at large and could pose a threat to other women.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed, “We confirm that a report was made to the Police, and the case is currently under investigation.”
