The trial regarding the tragic events aboard the Fishing Vessel Tiro II, which resulted in multiple fatalities in May 2021, resumed in the High Court of Suva. Tevita Qaqa Kapawale faces serious charges, including four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and criminal intimidation, as he is accused of orchestrating violence against crew members during a fishing trip.

Kaminieli Tucama, the first witness to testify, provided a harrowing account of the incident that unfolded between May 17 and 19, 2021. Packed with families of the victims, the courtroom bore witness to Tucama’s description of how what was originally planned as a two-week fishing expedition turned into a nightmare.

The crew’s journey, which began on May 8, 2021, included individuals from both Fiji and Indonesia. During a fishing trip in the Lomaiviti and Kadavu waters, the group was forced to alter their course due to inclement weather, steering toward Yasawa Waters instead. Tucama recounted that the chilling events started after the crew caught a Bigeye tuna. A moment of camaraderie rapidly devolved into chaos when Kapawale requested tobacco from Tucama, only to erupt into violence shortly thereafter.

Tucama detailed how he witnessed crew member Qiritivabea Cagilabakomeli injured and bleeding after being confronted by Kapawale, who wielded a wooden axe. As panic ensued, Tucama found himself fleeing towards the front of the vessel, where he hid for nearly two days seeking refuge and survival. Describing his ordeal, Tucama mentioned having little to eat and using makeshift tools for protection from Kapawale as he attempted to navigate the traumatic events.

Rescue arrived when a New Zealand helicopter responded to their emergency calls, ultimately locating Tucama and his fellow survivor, the bosun Mitieli Cama. The duo managed to secure their safety by alerting authorities through radio communication and signaling for help amid the sinking vessel.
