Police initiated a search operation last week after a suspicious container was spotted drifting at sea near Veidrala village in Ra Province. Local villagers, including a fisherman, reported seeing a flickering light atop the container, which could indicate an active GPS device.
Ana Naisoro, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed that despite deploying divers from the Police Mobile Force, authorities were unable to locate the container. The situation is especially concerning as Fiji has been identified as a potential transit point for drug trafficking, with drugs from regions like the USA and Latin America dropped off at sea for collection by criminal syndicates.
In a related context, law enforcement in Fiji has been ramping up efforts to combat drug trafficking across its maritime routes. Recent operations have led to significant drug busts, including several involving marijuana brought in through shipping vessels, where police have conducted thorough inspections and apprehended individuals in possession of illegal substances.
The ongoing vigilance and collaboration between the Fiji Police and community members are critical in these efforts. By raising awareness and encouraging reporting of suspicious activities, there is a shared hope that these initiatives will contribute to a safer environment and significantly reduce drug-related crimes in Fiji.
