Mysterious Body Found in Lautoka’s Dreketi River: DNA Testing Underway

Authorities are set to conduct DNA testing to ascertain the identity of a body found in the Dreketi River close to Saweni, Lautoka, on Wednesday afternoon. A group of youths discovered the body, which was reported to be in advanced stages of decomposition.

Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the Western Division, provided details about the case, suggesting that the body may have been in the water for several days due to its condition. “We are relying on DNA tests to determine that, but it should have been there for quite a while because it was partly decomposed,” SSP Vaisewa explained.

As of now, no suspects have been identified or questioned in relation to the incident. Local resident Watisoni Veiqali recounted the shocking moment he stumbled upon the body while on his way to fish with his siblings. He noticed a foul smell and discovered the body about 200 to 300 meters from the shore, wedged in the mangroves.

After making the grim discovery, Mr. Veiqali quickly contacted a neighbor to report to the police before returning to the shore. “I took them to the site. I don’t know how those near the shore did not smell it,” he noted.

This disturbing incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in their efforts to maintain public safety and investigate potential crimes. While the situation remains grim, the swift action of the local residents and the police may lead to important insights into this case.

In light of such tragic events, it is hopeful that the community will come together to support the investigation and assist one another during this trying time.
