Spread the love

Authorities are set to conduct DNA testing to establish the identity of a body found in the Dreketi River close to Saweni, Lautoka, on Wednesday afternoon. The discovery was made by a group of young people who came across the partially decomposed remains.

Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the West, confirmed that the condition of the body suggested it had been submerged for several days. “We are relying on DNA tests to determine that, but it should have been there for quite a while because it was partly decomposed,” he stated.

As of now, law enforcement has not questioned any suspects in connection with this unfortunate incident. Local resident Watisoni Veiqali provided further insight into the circumstances surrounding the discovery. While on his way to fish with his siblings, he caught a whiff of an unusual odor, leading him to the grim site approximately 200 to 300 meters from the shore, entangled in mangroves. Upon locating the body, Mr. Veiqali quickly informed another resident to alert the police before guiding them back to the scene.

This tragic event underscores the importance of community vigilance and communication with authorities. As investigations unfold, the hope remains that the identity of the individual will be established swiftly, bringing some closure to the family involved.

Summary: Police are using DNA testing to identify a body found in the Dreketi River by local youths. The partial decomposition suggests the body had been there for some days. No suspects have been identified yet, and the investigation continues.
