Authorities are set to utilize DNA testing to identify a body found in the Dreketi River close to Saweni, Lautoka, on Wednesday afternoon. A group of youths stumbled upon the distressing sight of a partially decomposed body while near the river.

Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the West, confirmed the condition of the remains. He indicated that the body likely had been submerged in the water for several days, suggesting it had been present for some time based on its state of decomposition.

As of now, no suspects have been identified or questioned in relation to the incident. Local resident Watisoni Veiqali provided an account of his shocking find. While leading his younger siblings along a path to go fishing, he noticed an unsettling odor. Upon investigation, he discovered the body approximately 200 to 300 meters from the shore, wedged in the mangroves.

After making the grim discovery, Mr. Veiqali promptly contacted another resident to report the situation to the police before returning to the shore. He expressed surprise that those near the shore had not detected the smell earlier.
