A new workboat, the MV Colata, was officially commissioned on October 15, 2025, to provide essential services and disaster response capabilities to the remote communities of the Lau Group in Fiji. The vessel, valued at $342,000, is funded by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management and is designed to operate as a mobile government office and emergency response platform.
Minister Sakiasi Ditoka, who officiated the commissioning ceremony, highlighted that this initiative is about more than just the vessel; it symbolizes a commitment to bridging the gap between policy and the people, and between hope and reality. The MV Colata, which translates to “to carry,” is named in honor of the chiefly lineage of Nayavu from Tailevu and Lau, underscoring its cultural significance to the region.
Minister Ditoka noted the vessel’s critical role in enhancing access to services, stating that it will transport ministry officials directly to isolated communities, facilitating the delivery of health, education, and economic support services right to the doors of the people in these remote islands. “This vessel will serve as a lifeline in times of disaster, ensuring that no island is left isolated during emergencies,” he emphasized.
Built locally by Integrated Welding Industries, the MV Colata reflects the rising confidence in Fijian technical capabilities and exemplifies the trend of Fijians contributing to national development through local resources. Minister Ditoka expressed pride in this achievement, indicating a collective effort to strengthen resilience and improve support for communities that require assistance.
The commissioning of the MV Colata represents a significant advancement in disaster preparedness and community support in Fiji, fostering hopes for enhanced connections and access to vital government services for the outer islands of the Lau Group. This initiative embodies a proactive approach to ensuring that all Fijians, regardless of their location, have the support and resources they need, creating a more inclusive society.
