The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that Goundar Shipping Limited’s recently acquired fast ferry, the MV Captain Inoke, has not yet undergone the necessary surveys and certifications required to be registered in Fiji. As a result, the vessel remains classified as a foreign ship.

The MV Captain Inoke, which arrived in Fiji with a Mongolian flag, docked at Suva Port early Friday. MSAF’s CEO, Joweli Cawaki, clarified that until the ferry is officially registered with local authorities, it cannot commence operations.

Mr. Cawaki indicated that communication is ongoing with Goundar Shipping’s managing director, George Goundar, who is expected to submit an application for registration next week. He emphasized the importance of this registration, as movement of the vessel is currently prohibited.

In response, Mr. Goundar acknowledged that while the ferry is registered under the Fiji Revenue Customs Authority as a foreign entity, it is owned by a Fijian businessman. He explained that the change in flag to Mongolian was necessitated by political issues in Korea, where the vessel was initially registered.

He expressed concerns about negative sentiments from rival firms but affirmed his commitment to serving the Fijian community, highlighting that the vessel represents a significant investment of over $7 million.

As the registration process unfolds, it is hoped that the MV Captain Inoke will soon commence its operations, enhancing maritime transport options in Fiji and contributing positively to the local economy.

This situation underlines the complexities involved in maritime regulations and the efforts of local businesses to navigate these challenges. It’s encouraging to see local entrepreneurs making substantial investments in Fiji’s maritime sector, which could boost employment and enhance services for residents and visitors.
