When you stumble upon an impromptu tin band, known locally as qiri kava, in the streets, consider making a small donation. Your generosity could make a meaningful impact, helping to provide food for those in need, clothing for the less fortunate, or even supporting the education of young individuals.
Not all of these street performances revolve solely around entertainment. For instance, the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami has been actively touring Lami and Suva since New Year’s Day, sharing not only joy but also a purpose with their music.
Band leader Irame Ratulele shared that their initiative serves a dual purpose: it helps keep local youth, especially boys, away from crime and drug abuse. “Many of our members are students, unemployed, or from disadvantaged backgrounds,” Ratulele explained. Their performances, often outside shopping centers and other busy areas, can generate up to $800 in donations on a good day.
The funds collected are thoughtfully allocated, with 10 percent going to the local church, some reserved for club activities, and the remainder distributed among members to help support their families. Additionally, the band uses part of the money for educational expenses, covering fees and school supplies for secondary and tertiary students.
Hailing from an area in Lami that has historically faced challenges, the band is transforming lives through its positive influence. Ratulele emphasized the importance of steering young members away from substance abuse and highlighted the regrets of senior members who previously neglected their education. They now stress the necessity of education as a pathway to better job opportunities, which can ultimately lead to a decrease in crime rates.
The dedication of the Washington Tin Band was recognized when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva last year, reflecting both their talent and commitment to fostering positive change within their community.
This story illustrates the potential of community initiatives to enact significant change. By promoting education and providing support, groups like the Washington Tin Band not only enhance the livelihood of individuals but also contribute to a safer, more promising future for their community.
In essence, your small contributions to such causes can lead to substantial changes in the lives of many. Together, through music and compassion, we can create a brighter and more hopeful tomorrow.
