Umarji Aiyaz Mohammed Musa, a convicted businessman and former sports leader, has returned to Fiji but faces ongoing legal challenges. After serving a reduced sentence in New Zealand for drug importation, Musa is now under investigation by Fijian authorities for serious crimes.

Musa was sentenced to four years in prison in August 2023 for smuggling pseudoephedrine valued at $5 million from Fiji to New Zealand. This substance is a critical ingredient in methamphetamine production. He was linked to the trafficking operation, overseeing more than ten pharmacies throughout the Pacific.

Following a successful appeal, his sentence was shortened by six months, allowing him to return to Fiji last Wednesday. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mesake Waqa confirmed that investigations are still active, focusing on organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and fund misappropriation.

The inquiry is being spearheaded by the Criminal Investigations Department and the Serious Organised Crime Unit, prompted by reports from the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit. “We are pursuing these matters diligently,” ACP Waqa stated.

Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to combating crime, asserting that “no one is above the law.” While he acknowledged Musa’s return, he refrained from providing further information due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation.

“We remain determined in our fight against narcotics and organized crime,” he added. “Law enforcement will ensure that due process is adhered to in every investigation to protect our communities from the dangers of illegal activities.”

Musa, who once served as vice-president of the Fiji Football Association, had established a high-profile business portfolio, which included pharmacies, restaurants, and real estate. His arrest and conviction significantly impacted Fiji, damaging the reputation of someone previously esteemed in both sports and pharmaceutical sectors.
