Former Ratu Kadavulevu School student and Fijian Drua open-side flanker Motikiai Murray is looking forward to an exciting season next year. The 21-year-old, hailing from Lovoni, Ovalau in Lomaiviti, is gradually returning to training following ankle surgery in Sydney, Australia, a few months ago. He has maternal ties to Nukuni-i-cake, Ono I Lau.

“I’m concentrating on my rehabilitation and have been preparing well for the upcoming season,” he stated. “I haven’t started running yet, but I hope to join the field sessions soon.”

Murray made his debut for the Drua during their Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal match against the Crusaders last June. He is taking advantage of the senior players’ experience on the team, with aspirations of making his debut for the Flying Fijians in the near future.

Growing up, Murray drew inspiration from Flying Fijian flanker Levani Botia, striving to emulate his skills. “Botia is impressive in both defense and breakdown; I admired his play and hope to be that strong one day,” he said.

“It feels great to play alongside fellow athletes. I often watched them compete in rugby league, sevens, and for the Flying Fijians. It’s been thrilling to be part of this team. My main focus is to stay fit and perform at my best during the season.”

Murray expressed his eagerness to represent the national team, mentioning that he would be open to playing as a number 8 if the opportunity arises. Over the past two seasons, he has participated in six matches for the Drua.
