Edward Nand, a convicted murderer, has recently appealed to the High Court in Suva, seeking an opportunity for reform and a continuation of his education as part of his sentencing hearing. During the proceedings, Nand appeared with noticeable injuries, prompting concerns about his treatment while in custody. His defense attorney, Sunil Gosai, advocated for leniency by highlighting Nand’s prior good character and background as a former law student.
In the courtroom, the lawyer representing co-accused Salimoni Lagicere expressed that Lagicere feels remorseful and has been cooperative with the authorities throughout the investigation. Conversely, prosecutor Zenith Zunaid firmly opposed these assertions, labeling the incident a “pre-planned, cold-blooded murder.” The case centers on the tragic demise of Narend Chand, a Fiji-born Canadian, who was lured to Fiji via a deceptive social media profile set up by Nand. Upon his arrival, he was tragically attacked, strangled, beaten, and ultimately disposed of over a bridge near Korovou.
Nand’s legal troubles extend beyond this case, as he faces a second murder charge and has a documented history of alleged violent behavior. The presiding Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull is expected to announce her decision regarding Nand’s fate on March 7.
As the legal proceedings unfold, this case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by online interactions and the significance of vigilance when engaging with unknown individuals on social media platforms. While the severity of the crime is undeniable, there remains hope that the judicial process will act as a safeguard to protect the community and deliver justice.
