Edward Nand, a convicted murderer, has made a plea to the High Court in Suva for a chance to reform and continue his education during his sentencing hearing. Nand appeared with visible injuries, raising concerns regarding his treatment in custody. His lawyer, Sunil Gosai, argued for leniency, mentioning Nand’s previous good character and status as a former law student.
The court also heard from the lawyer representing co-accused Salimoni Lagicere, who stated that Lagicere is remorseful and has cooperated with the authorities. However, prosecutor Zenith Zunaid strongly opposed these arguments, labeling the crime as a “pre-planned, cold-blooded murder.” The case revolves around the brutal killing of Narend Chand, a Fiji-born Canadian, who was lured to Fiji through a fake social media profile created by Nand. Upon his arrival, he was ambushed, strangled, beaten, and his body discarded over a bridge near Korovou.
Alongside this current sentencing case, it has been noted that Nand has additional legal troubles, including a second murder charge and a history of alleged violence.
Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull is set to deliver her ruling on March 7, which will determine Nand’s fate. As the legal proceedings continue, there remains hope that justice will be served, reminding the public of the critical need for vigilance and caution in online interactions. This tragic case underscores the dangers of deception in digital relationships and the serious implications for personal safety when engaging with individuals on social media platforms.
