The trial of an 18-year-old man, Rihaal Kumar, charged with the murder of 20-year-old Sharuf Shaakir Khan, has been postponed for three weeks. The High Court in Suva, presided over by Justice Daniel Goundar, heard today that Kumar is undergoing a second psychiatric evaluation at St Giles Hospital, which has influenced the decision to vacate the trial date.

Kumar stands accused of allegedly killing Khan at an apartment complex located on Waimanu Road on July 7, 2025. He is being represented by attorney Robert Bancod from Millbrook Hills Law, while Bhavna Kantharia is serving as the prosecutor in the case. As the judicial proceedings progress, the focus will remain on Kumar’s mental health evaluation, which could play a pivotal role in the legal process ahead.

The case highlights the complexities of dealing with mental health in criminal proceedings, underscoring the legal system’s effort to balance justice with the well-being of the accused. As further evaluations are conducted and the case moves forward, it is important to ensure that all aspects are thoroughly examined to achieve a fair outcome.
