A 46-year-old taxi driver from Nadi, Daniel Francis Prasad, has been denied bail following charges of murdering his pregnant partner during a domestic dispute over the weekend. Prasad appeared in Nadi Magistrate Court as he faces one count of murder for allegedly fatally stabbing his 28-year-old partner with a cane knife during an argument on April 27, 2025. The incident took place at their home in Kerebula, where their three children were present and witnessed the tragic event. The woman was 31 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
During the court proceedings, police prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police Parmesh Chand objected to bail due to Prasad’s pending legal issues. Prasad expressed his intention to represent himself rather than seek a Legal Aid attorney, stating that he felt he could speak for himself in court. However, Magistrate Semi Babitu advised him to consider legal representation given the severe nature of the charges.
The case has been adjourned until May 14 for a further hearing. This incident echoes broader concerns surrounding domestic violence in Fiji, highlighting the urgent need for addressing such issues within the community. The presence of children during the incident further emphasizes the necessity of focused discussions and preventive measures regarding domestic violence situations.
As communities rally to confront these challenges, there is hope for a societal shift that fosters healthier relationships and ultimately reduces the incidence of domestic violence. A continued dialogue is essential in creating a safer environment, as highlighted by recent similar cases. The judicial process will play a crucial role in seeking justice while also raising awareness about the pressing issue of domestic violence.
