A 40-year-old man has been remanded by the Magistrates Court in Suva following allegations of assaulting a 70-year-old man, which ultimately led to the elderly man’s death. The accused, Netani Toma, appeared before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza and faces a charge of murder.

The court proceedings revealed that Toma was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which took place at the Namadai settlement in Namadi Heights. The elderly victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

The case has been scheduled for its first mention in the High Court on November 22, and Toma has been informed that he has the option to request bail in the higher court.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issues of alcohol-related violence and its devastating impacts on communities. It serves as a somber reminder of the need for support systems and intervention programs to prevent such occurrences in the future, fostering a safer environment for all individuals, especially the vulnerable elderly population.
