Anare Vuli Cilicewa, who is charged with murder, has decided to withdraw his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation report from the Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. Cilicewa appeared in court today before High Court Judge Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, facing a charge linked to the alleged murder of Sabreen Shahib Ali in Raiwaqa, Suva, on September 9, 2024.
His attorney, Manisha Singh, informed the court that Cilicewa comprehends the delay in filing the bail application, as they are still anticipating the psychiatric report. Singh emphasized that the principal medical officer at the psychiatric hospital needed to be informed about the charges to conduct a thorough examination. Judge Bulamainaivalu stressed the importance of providing the necessary disclosures to the doctor, suggesting that it would be beneficial for Singh to directly discuss the case details with Doctor Kiran Gaikwad, ensuring the confidentiality of the information is preserved.
State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid added that the police are in the process of preparing an additional set of disclosures required for the case. He mentioned that preliminary findings from the autopsy report indicated evidence of strangling and choking. The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 3, during which the psychiatric report’s status will be reviewed.
This case raises critical discussions about mental health assessments in legal proceedings, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring that the accused receives a fair evaluation. The adjournment provides an opportunity for a more thorough understanding of Cilicewa’s mental state, which could play a significant role in the judicial process.
