Anare Vuli Cilicewa, who is facing murder charges, has decided to withdraw his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation from the Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. During a court appearance in Suva before High Court Judge Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, Cilicewa was implicated in the alleged murder of Sabreen Shahib Ali, which occurred on September 9, 2024, in Raiwaqa, Suva.
His attorney, Manisha Singh, informed the court that Cilicewa comprehended the reasons behind the delay in his bail application as they are still pending the psychiatric report. Singh emphasized that the principal medical officer at Saint Giles needs to be apprised of the charges against Cilicewa to conduct a thorough assessment.
Justice Bulamainaivalu underscored the importance of providing necessary disclosures to the involved medical professional, suggesting that Singh should collaborate directly with Dr. Kiran Gaikwad to ensure the information is shared appropriately while maintaining confidentiality.
State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid also addressed the court, revealing that police are in the process of compiling additional necessary disclosures. He noted that the autopsy report pointed to indicators of strangulation and choking as factors in the case. The proceedings have been postponed until December 3, when the court will review the psychiatric report.
This case underscores the legal system’s commitment to ensuring that defendants receive adequate mental health evaluations, which can be crucial to the pursuit of justice. The adjournment provides time to ensure that all necessary evaluations are conducted thoroughly, promoting a fair legal process for all parties involved.
