Two men charged with the murder of a Fiji-born Canadian national, Narend Chand, near Korovou in Tailevu in February of the previous year have had their judgment postponed to February 6, 2025. Salimoni Lagicere and Edward Nand were set to receive their verdict today but Suva Judge Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull decided to adjourn the case.
The allegations suggest that Chand had made plans to meet a woman he had been in contact with on social media, unaware that the profile was fake and controlled by one of the accused. The pair is believed to have arranged to rob him upon his arrival in Fiji. Tragically, his body was later discovered floating in the Waimaro River near Waito Settlement in Tailevu.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has approved the charges, with lawyer Zenith Zunaid representing the state. Lagicere is defended by lawyer Loqi Cati, while Nand is represented by lawyer Sunil Gosai.
This case highlights serious issues surrounding online safety and the dangers of social media interactions, reminding us of the importance of being vigilant while communicating online. As the legal proceedings continue, there is hope for justice for Chand’s family and friends, who are undoubtedly seeking closure.
The upcoming judgment date will provide an opportunity for the court to deliver a decision in what has become a significant and tragic case, underlining the necessary balance between justice and the legal process.
