Murder suspect Anare Vuli Cilicewa has officially retracted his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation from Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. Cilicewa appeared in the High Court in Suva before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, facing a murder charge in connection with the death of Sabreen Shahib Ali, which occurred on September 9 in Raiwaqa, Suva.
During the hearing, his attorney, Manisha Singh, explained that Cilicewa comprehended the situation regarding his bail application, which had not yet been filed due to the pending psychiatric report. She emphasized that the principal medical officer at St. Giles needed to be informed of the charges to conduct a thorough assessment.
Justice Bulamainaivalu advised Ms. Singh to meet with Doctor Kiran Gaikwad to provide the appropriate information required for the evaluation while maintaining the confidentiality of the disclosures. Meanwhile, State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid conveyed to the court that the police are in the process of preparing additional disclosures. He noted that preliminary findings from the autopsy indicated signs of strangulation and choking.
The case has been scheduled for a follow-up hearing on December 3, where updates on the psychiatric report, photographic evidence from the crime scene, and the autopsy results will be reviewed.
Overall, this situation underscores the complexities involved in legal proceedings, particularly in cases concerning mental health assessments. As the court navigates these sensitive issues, there is hope that a thorough and just examination of evidence will lead to a resolution that respects both the rights of the accused and the memory of the victim.
