Anare Vuli Cilicewa, who is facing murder charges, has decided to withdraw his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation from the Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. During a court session today in Suva, presided over by High Court Judge Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, Cilicewa was charged with the murder of Sabreen Shahib Ali, an incident that occurred on September 9, 2024, in Raiwaqa, Suva.

Cilicewa’s attorney, Manisha Singh, informed the court that her client is fully aware of the delay in filing his bail application due to the wait for the psychiatric report. Singh emphasized the importance of providing the principal medical officer at Saint Giles with the details of the murder charges to facilitate an accurate assessment of Cilicewa’s mental state.

Justice Bulamainaivalu underscored the necessity for the disclosures to be communicated to the medical professional involved in the assessment. He suggested that it would have been advantageous for Singh to consult with Doctor Kiran Gaikwad to ensure he received the required information without breaching confidentiality.

In the meantime, State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid revealed that the Police are in the process of preparing additional disclosures for the case. Zunaid also noted that the autopsy report indicated signs of strangulation and choking in the victim.

The case has been adjourned until December 3, at which point the psychiatric report is expected to be reviewed.

This ongoing legal process highlights the importance of mental health evaluations in the judicial system, particularly in severe cases such as murder charges. As the situation develops, it remains crucial to ensure that justice is served while also considering the mental health needs of the accused, allowing for a fair legal process.
