Anare Vuli Cilicewa, who faces a murder charge, has decided to withdraw his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation from Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. During his appearance before High Court Judge Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu in Suva, Cilicewa was informed that he is charged with the murder of Sabreen Shahib Ali, alleged to have occurred on September 9, 2024, in Raiwaqa, Suva.
Cilicewa’s lawyer, Manisha Singh, communicated to the court that her client is aware of the delay surrounding the bail application, attributing it to the pending psychiatric report. She stressed the need for the principal medical officer at the Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital to be briefed on the charges, enabling him to conduct a thorough evaluation.
Justice Bulamainaivalu emphasized to Singh the importance of ensuring that the necessary disclosures are made to the psychiatrist without compromising confidentiality. He suggested that it would be beneficial for Singh to meet with Doctor Kiran Gaikwad to provide the required information directly.
Additionally, State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid informed the court that the police are in the process of preparing a supplementary disclosure document. He revealed that the autopsy report has indicated signs of strangulation and choking.
The case is now scheduled to be revisited on December 3 to assess the status of the psychiatric report.
This situation highlights the intricacies of legal proceedings that involve mental health evaluations, illustrating the necessity of thorough evaluations in criminal cases. It is hopeful that the forthcoming report will bring clarity and aid in seeking justice for all parties involved, emphasizing the judicial system’s commitment to a fair process.
