Anare Vuli Cilicewa, charged with murder, has decided to withdraw his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric assessment from the Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. Cilicewa appeared before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu in the High Court in Suva, facing allegations of the murder of Sabreen Shahib Ali on September 9 in Raiwaqa, Suva.

During the proceedings, defense attorney Manisha Singh informed the court that Cilicewa was aware of the status of his application, which was not yet submitted as they were still waiting for the psychiatric report. She emphasized that the principal medical officer at St. Giles requires knowledge of the charges to conduct a thorough evaluation of her client.

Justice Bulamainaivalu advised Singh that it was crucial to maintain confidentiality regarding the charges when communicating with the medical officer. He suggested that she meet with Dr. Kiran Gaikwad to provide him with relevant information without compromising the privacy of the disclosures.

State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid added that police are in the process of preparing additional disclosures. He noted that the autopsy report indicated potential signs of strangulation and choking.

The case has been adjourned until December 3, when the court will further review the psychiatric report, photographic evidence from the crime scene, and the autopsy findings.

This situation underscores the complexities of the judicial process involving mental health assessments. As the legal proceedings continue, there is hope that a thorough review of all evidence, including the psychiatric evaluation, will lead to a just resolution. The court’s emphasis on confidentiality highlights its commitment to protecting both the rights of the accused and the integrity of the judicial process.
