Caleb Muntz’s outstanding performance in the FIJI Water Flying Fijians’ 24-19 victory over Wales has drawn commendation from head coach Mick Byrne. Muntz contributed significantly by successfully converting four penalty kicks, scoring a try, and making a conversion, thereby aiding his team in overcoming the 26-32 loss they experienced during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

His impressive display of agility, skill, and flair led to his recognition as the player of the match, having amassed 19 points in this intense matchup. Coach Byrne acknowledged Muntz’s exceptional contribution on the field, noting how he distinguished himself from other players entering high-stakes rugby competitions.

“Caleb is improving with every game. As a young player with only one full season of Super Rugby under his belt, and having faced injury during the World Cup, I believe he has truly made his mark in tier one rugby,” Byrne remarked. He pointed out the difficulty of performing well at the Principality Stadium, highlighting Muntz’s accomplishment in such a challenging environment.

Despite facing adversity, including the sending off of winger Semi Radradra for a dangerous tackle and Elia Canakaivata’s yellow card for stopping a rolling maul—resulting in a penalty try for Wales—Fiji managed to maintain composure. Josua Tuisova also showcased his strength by scoring Fiji’s other try against two Welsh defenders.

Looking ahead, the Flying Fijians are set to clash with Spain in their next match at 2 am on Sunday, followed by a final game of the season against Ireland next week.

In summary, Caleb Muntz’s stellar performance not only helped secure a crucial win for Fiji but also marks a significant step in his burgeoning career. The team’s resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity provide a promising outlook for their upcoming matches, as they continue to build on this momentum. It’s a hopeful testament to the rising talent within the Flying Fijians’ squad.
