Caleb Muntz has received accolades for his outstanding performance in the FIJI Water Flying Fijians’ recent 24-19 victory over Wales. The young rugby player converted four penalty kicks, scored a try, and successfully completed a conversion, aiding his team in overcoming the 26-32 loss during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
His impressive display of agility and skill earned him the title of player of the match, contributing a total of 19 points in a fiercely contested game. Head coach Mick Byrne expressed pride in Muntz’s performance, highlighting the young talent’s progression in large-scale rugby events.
“Caleb is improving with every game. He’s still young, having only completed one full season in Super Rugby, and despite facing injuries during the World Cup, he truly made his mark in tier one rugby,” Byrne commented. He noted that it is rare for fly-halves to perform at such a high level in the challenging environment of the Principality Stadium, underscoring Muntz’s exceptional abilities.
Despite some challenges during the match, including a red card for winger Semi Radradra and a yellow card for Elia Canakaivata, who was penalized for a dangerous tackle, Fiji exhibited remarkable resilience. Josua Tuisova also showcased his strength by scoring a try, fending off two Welsh defenders.
Looking ahead, the Flying Fijians are set to face Spain at 2 AM on Sunday, followed by their final match of the season against Ireland next week.
This victory not only reflects the talent of individual players like Muntz but also serves as a reminder of the Flying Fijians’ potential as a formidable team on the international stage. Their upcoming matches provide an opportunity to build on this success and further enhance their reputation in the rugby world.
