Multi-Ethnic Affairs Minister Charan Jeath Singh has confirmed that there will be no revival of the Multi-Ethnic Affairs scholarships, which had been sought by various community groups since its discontinuation by the previous administration. Singh emphasized that scholarships fall under the purview of the Ministry of Education, while his ministry is dedicated solely to funding community and cultural projects.
Despite prior discussions suggesting the potential reinstatement of these scholarships, the minister’s latest statements have dashed hopes. Instead of scholarships, Singh has reiterated his ministry’s commitment to revitalizing community projects that have long been neglected. During a recent tour, he officiated the completion of five projects that received funding from the ministry, demonstrating a shift in focus towards concrete community development measures.
Singh stated, “We are now trying to roll out and start handing over projects wherever we can.” His ministry had a budget of $1.2 million last year and processed over 200 applications to support various community initiatives. These investments aim to enhance the quality of life and infrastructure for the diverse communities throughout the country.
The current approach builds on past successful initiatives where grant allocations have fostered social cohesion and enabled communities to thrive. Similar efforts, such as a recent allocation of $383,900 to benefit 55 communities in the Western Division, reflect the government’s dedication to empowering ethnically diverse groups. These grants have been integral in kickstarting various local projects, from water management systems to musical instruments, underscoring the ministry’s broader commitment to enhancing inclusivity and nurturing community spirit.
Singh’s ongoing efforts not only tackle immediate developmental needs but also lay the foundation for a more cooperative and connected society. By prioritizing community projects over scholarships, the aim is to create enduring benefits for all segments of the population, promoting a culture of support and shared growth that values diversity and community collaboration.
