The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is taking proactive measures to ensure that all shipping vessels are staffed with qualified crew members. Chief Executive Officer Joeli Cawaki emphasized the importance of crew qualifications as they investigate recent maritime incidents, particularly several grounding events that have raised concerns.
Cawaki noted that MSAF is committed to thoroughly reviewing all maritime incidents, including two recent groundings between Natovi and Ovalau, as well as one in Moala. Initial findings suggest that human error may have contributed to these accidents, highlighting the necessity for well-trained personnel on board.
MSAF is awaiting the completion of the ongoing investigation before determining any actions to address the incidents. “Once we receive the investigation report, we will evaluate how to impose penalties on those responsible, in line with the MSAF licensing regulations,” Cawaki stated, reinforcing that their approach will follow established laws and regulations.
As MSAF continues its efforts to enhance maritime safety, it is clear that their focus on crew qualifications is a significant step towards preventing future incidents and ensuring safer operations at sea.
This commitment to ensuring qualified crew members not only aims to improve maritime safety but also reinforces the Authority’s dedication to maintaining robust standards within Fiji’s maritime industry, fostering a safer environment for navigation and commerce.
