The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has issued a strong warning regarding overcrowding on vessels, with CEO Joeli Cawaki emphasizing that such practices will not be tolerated. This alert comes as many individuals plan to travel to remote islands and marine areas to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.

Cawaki clarified that vessel owners who overload passengers and cargo will face repercussions. He noted, “We often see overloading during this period of the year.” Each vessel is issued a service certificate that outlines the maximum number of passengers it can carry, and any violation will result in MSAF staff intervening at the jetties to halt the vessel’s departure.

To ensure compliance, MSAF will enhance its presence at the jetties. Cawaki mentioned, “Considering the increased movement of people and the crowded conditions at the jetties, we will be stepping up our monitoring.” Authorities may count passengers and verify cargo as part of their checks, working alongside ship owners to ensure safety standards are met.

This proactive approach aims to safeguard passengers and maintain safety during the busy holiday season, demonstrating MSAF’s commitment to maritime safety and protecting families traveling for Christmas.

In summary, the MSAF is intensifying efforts to prevent overcrowding on vessels during the Christmas travel season, ensuring that safety regulations are enforced, which ultimately supports a safe and enjoyable holiday experience for all travelers.
