Former Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has expressed strong opinions regarding Members of Parliament (MPs) who either voted against or abstained from a recent pay rise and benefits increase for themselves. In a thoughtful social media message, Sayed-Khaiyum suggested that these MPs should not reap the rewards of the pay rise that was accepted by the majority.
He urged those who opposed the increase to demonstrate their genuine stance by donating the financial benefit to a charitable organization or establishing a trust for the same purpose. Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that it would have been commendable for these MPs to take action sooner, indicating that transparency in their donations would reaffirm their commitment to their initial position against the pay rise.
Sayed-Khaiyum emphasized that such actions would not only validate their integrity but also shed light on the contrasting motivations of the MPs who voted for the increase. He remarked that failing to act on their opposition would suggest that they are as culpable as those who supported the pay rise, especially at a time when many ordinary Fijians are facing significant challenges.
In May, 40 MPs endorsed the salary changes, while seven opposed and five abstained. The call for accountability among representatives emphasizes the importance of responsible leadership in addressing public concerns and supporting those in need.
