A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is actively investigating a theft case that resulted in a loss of $5,800 from Malti Devi, the 66-year-old mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident occurred on December 19, 2024, when Devi realized her purse was missing while she was at CWM Hospital collecting medication. Although she did not notice the theft immediately, it became apparent the following morning while she was preparing for a physiotherapy appointment.

Upon discovering the missing purse, Mr. Maharaj promptly contacted Bank South Pacific to block the card associated with the purse, only to learn that it had already been used for unauthorized withdrawals and purchases totaling approximately $1,800 at Thirsty Liquor in Lami. Alarmed by the situation, he filed a formal complaint at Raiwaqa Police Station and urged for swift action to address the theft, expressing frustration over the lack of urgency from the police, particularly as more than two weeks had elapsed since the incident without significant progress.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Investigators have secured Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the liquor outlet in Lami and are currently awaiting permission from the bank to retrieve footage from the ATM.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilant action against theft and highlights the continuing need for improvements in law enforcement responsiveness. The cooperation between the police and the Maharaj family in gathering evidence could potentially lead to a resolution, restoring a sense of security to the community.

With the efforts currently underway, there is hope that the investigation will yield positive results, bringing the perpetrator to justice and enhancing public safety. Such proactive measures by both law enforcement and the affected family underscore a collective commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
