MPs Called to Prove Integrity After Controversial Pay Rise Vote

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has emphasized the need for transparency and accountability from Members of Parliament (MPs) who either opposed or abstained from voting on a recent pay rise and benefits increase for government officials. He challenged these MPs to demonstrate their genuine opposition to the pay hike by donating the additional funds to charitable organizations.

In May 2024, a vote saw 40 MPs in favor of salary increases for the President, Speaker, Ministers, Assistant Ministers, and themselves, while seven MPs voted against and five abstained from the motion. Sayed-Khaiyum questioned the integrity of those who opposed or abstained, suggesting that if they were genuinely against the increase, they should have already taken action to contribute the funds to those in need.

“Those MPs who voted against or abstained from this ethically and morally questionable pay rise should not benefit from it,” Sayed-Khaiyum stated. He urged them to either donate the money to reputable charitable organizations or establish a trust to support ordinary Fijians.

To reinforce his point, he called for full transparency and public disclosure of any charitable contributions made by these MPs. He argued that if they truly cared about the struggles of everyday citizens in Fiji, this would be their chance to prove it.

Failing to donate, Sayed-Khaiyum warned, would place these MPs in a morally grey area, similar to those who voted in favor of the pay rise, as ordinary Fijians continue to face challenges in their daily lives. He urged them to exhibit political wisdom and moral leadership by taking decisive action against the pay raise.

In summary, Sayed-Khaiyum’s statements reflect a call for accountability among politicians and an opportunity for them to reaffirm their commitment to the welfare of the public. By encouraging charitable action, there is potential for positive outcomes that could benefit those in need in Fiji. This presents a chance for MPs to truly align their actions with their declared values.
