Mpaisa Scams Unveiled: Two Women Charged in Fraud Cases

The Fiji Police Force’s Mpaisa Taskforce has recently charged two women in separate cases of financial fraud. A 23-year-old woman from Rakiraki stands accused of unlawfully obtaining $336 from a member of the public through the Mpaisa platform on January 31 of the previous year. Investigations revealed that the funds were mistakenly transferred to her account, and she subsequently withdrew the money knowing she was not entitled to it. This incident was reported to the Valelevu Police Station, leading to her arrest. She is currently in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Sigatoka Magistrate Court today.

In another unrelated case, a 44-year-old caregiver from Dreketi Feeder Road in Lautoka has also been charged with obtaining financial advantage. It is alleged that she unlawfully received $250 from a member of the public through Mpaisa last January. Reports suggest she created a Facebook account impersonating her husband, a Disk Jockey who provides live streaming services, and collected money for services that were never rendered, all without his knowledge. This matter was reported to the Nabua Police Station, and the caregiver is also in custody, set to appear in the Lautoka Magistrate Court.

These cases highlight the ongoing issues of financial fraud associated with digital transactions in Fiji, particularly within platforms like Mpaisa.
