Mount Kasi Reconciliation Opens Fiji Mining Prospects

The Fijian government has made significant progress in its efforts to resolve long-standing disputes with landowners in Mount Kasi, paving the way for potential new mineral exploration, which may lead to substantial economic growth and job creation in Cakaudrove Province. Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo informed Parliament that after 16 months of negotiations, a historic reconciliation ceremony was held in Dawara Village, marking the beginning of a new collaboration between the government, landowners, and Vatukoula Gold Mines Limited, the entity that holds the exploration license.

Vosarogo pointed out that Mount Kasi is currently designated as an exploration project rather than an operating mine. The rights to engage in mineral exploration were awarded to Vatukoula Gold Mines under Special Prospecting License (SPL) 1519, which was granted on June 20, 2024, for a duration of three years. Tensions initially flared when some landowners expressed a preference for a different company, Aquilo Gold, which had also sought the license in 2020. However, the recent developments signify a shift towards consensus, with traditional leaders and chiefs now endorsing the government’s approach.

The Minister cited lessons from similar mining operations in Vatukoula and Tuvatu, emphasizing the importance of ensuring local communities derive direct benefits from any mineral development activities. In light of these recent agreements, opposition MP Vijay Nath expressed support for the developments but also urged the ministry to promote sustainable usage of surrounding resources among the landowners.

To support these initiatives, Vosarogo highlighted the ministry’s commitment to facilitating community discussions, helping landowners identify and invest in local service industries that would complement mining operations. The ongoing collaboration reflects a hopeful transition towards inclusive governance that emphasizes both community input and economic development. By securing the cooperation of landowners and aligning their interests with national development goals, the government hopes to foster a sustainable model for resource management that not only respects local rights but also drives economic growth in the region.
