Motikiai Murray Aims High After Injury Comeback

Motikiai Murray, a former student of Ratu Kadavulevu School and open-side flanker for Fijian Drua, is looking forward to an exciting upcoming season. The 21-year-old from Lovoni, Ovalau, Lomaiviti, is gradually returning to training after ankle surgery he underwent in Sydney, Australia, a few months back. He has maternal ties to Nukuni-i-cake, Ono I Lau.

Murray shared that he is concentrating on his rehabilitation and preparing well for the upcoming season. Although he has yet to start running, he is hopeful to join the field sessions soon.

Murray made his debut with the Drua during their Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal match against the Crusaders in June of the previous year. He is eager to learn from the senior players in his team and aspires to earn his spot on the Flying Fijians squad shortly.

Growing up, he drew inspiration from Flying Fijian flanker Levani Botia, whom he admired for his strength in defense and breakdown situations. “I loved watching him, and I hope to become that kind of player one day,” Murray stated.

He expressed his enthusiasm for playing alongside the experienced players, recalling how he used to watch them compete in rugby league, sevens, and for the Flying Fijians. “Being on the same team has been thrilling, and my primary goal is to stay fit and perform my best this season,” he added.

Murray is also patiently waiting for the opportunity to wear the national jersey and mentioned that he would be open to playing as a number 8 if the chance arises. Over the past two seasons, he has participated in six matches for the Drua.
